Absolut-ly Crazy

absolute mexico ad

To me IN AN ABSOLUT WORLD it would be filled with Grey Goose Vodka. I have mixed feelings with this Ad. Even though Absolut did not intend to offend anyone I can see some taking this ad the wrong way. With the Political Showdown going on right now I can see how this topic can cause some uproar.

Words from Absolut:

In an ABSOLUT World according to Mexico

Posted Friday, April 04, 2008, 5:26:34 PM
The In An Absolut World advertising campaign invites consumers to visualize a world that appeals to them — one they feel may be more idealized or one that may be a bit “fantastic.” As such, the campaign will elicit varying opinions and points of view. We have a variety of executions running in countries worldwide, and each is germane to that country and that population.

This particular ad, which ran in Mexico, was based upon historical perspectives and was created with a Mexican sensibility. In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues. Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.

As a global company, we recognize that people in different parts of the world may lend different perspectives or interpret our ads in a different way than was intended in that market. Obviously, this ad was run in Mexico, and not the US — that ad might have been very different.

Tim Nudd from AdWeek posted:

An Absolut ad from Mexico City that shows Mexico taking over a large portion of the United States? Oh, that’s not going to go over well up here. Not at all. And sure enough, it isn’t. “Absolut-ly outrageous,” says Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit. “Absolut-ly insulting,” adds Brian Ledbetter. (At least they’re not so enraged that they forget to pun on the Absolut name.) Rather than complain, Patrick Ishmael over at The News Bucket whips up his own altered map, on which Absolut’s homeland of Sweden gets totally hosed by Finland.

Already I’m starting to see some other alliterative ADs appearing.

What are your thoughts on it? Do you think they will loose in the market place or gain?

After viewing the amazing new Habitat for Humanity campaign that launched Last month from the people over at Door Number 3 in Austin. I couldn’t help but notice the way photographer Eric Kiel captured each image used in the campaign.  Below are a few examples from the Ads that ran.

 Louis Vuitton Journeys: Keith Richards

Some people seem to like this AD. I’m just not one of them. My eyes hurt by looking at how rough Keith Richrads looks. Is it me or does he look like a skip away from death?

A good headline might be… “No matter how long you own a Louis it will never look as old as Keith Richards.”

The Centre for Conflict Resolution Journalism is active around the world training journalists, propagating ethical media reporting, exposing political corruption and human rights abuse, and assisting international democratic reform as part of the organization’s overall strategy for conflict resolution.

Here are a few ads I found from Giovanni+Draftfcb Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that put a spin on CCRJ towards the advertisement agencies. Pretty interesting.

Motorola pays tribute to film greats in latest handset campaign

May 26th, 2007 Tom Okeefe

LONDON — A new TV spot for Motorola’s Mortorizr Z8 phone uses classic movie clips spliced together to form a history of moving pictures from the 19th century up to the present day.

The ad by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO moves through different genres and time periods, with the movie hero on horseback the only constant in the 60-second ad. The ad culminates with the comparison between modern-day film resolution and the quality available on the new Z8 handset.

Footage for the ad was shot in Spain and pays homage to classic film genres such as the western, kung-fu, action thriller and romantic epic.

The ad was shot in Spain at the studios where Sergio Leone shot his classic spaghetti westerns such as ‘Fistfull of Dollars’, which starred Clint Eastwood. The studio was also where the Charlton Heston epic ‘El Cid’ and ‘The Magnificent Seven’ were shot.

Motorola’s former European marketing director, Simon Thomson, worked on the new project for the Z8 before quitting the role in March. Thomson, who had only being with the company for one year, is now European marketing director at Lastminute.com.

Omnicom’s AMV BBDO won the £13m UK Motorola creative business in December 2005 from incumbent Ogilvy & Mather.

Agosto produces Nike’s new ad campaign

May 26th, 2007 Tom Okeefe

Film director Nacho Gayán, based in a concept from Villarrosàs agency, has made the debut of the new spot performed by Ronaldinho, Rafa Nadal, Pau Gasol, Fernando Torres and Sergio Ramos.

Its title, «Momentum» means Nike´s recognition to the optimum moment that Spanish sport enjoys.

Drama, danger and challenge in a weird setting where only a few people can enter… and, at the end the climax, a taunt:

AddArt Pluging for Firefox

April 30th, 2007 Tom Okeefe

I don’t know about this Firefox plugin yet. AddArt which replaces advertising images on web pages with art images from a curated database. Who will this curator be? Some world renowned curator that will bring us the best work from around the world? I think not.
I wonder who has control over which artist get to rotate through the plugin and will those Ads be click able to purchase or to get gallery times and dates?
So you replace one Ad with another more targeted Ad. Wouldn’t this still be considered advertising?

I have a brilliant idea… Just don’t click the Ad then problem solved. Right?
